By all indications, young people today are making better (and smarter) decisions than previous generations. For instance:

·         Kids today smoke less than previous generations

·         They get pregnant less than previous generations

·         They binge drink less than previous generations

·         They watch less TV previous generations

·         They don’t fight as much previous generations

·         They do drugs at a much lower rate than previous generations

More so, for the past twenty-five years, the government has been conducting a study called Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey to inquire about all sorts of behaviors that range from drug use to fighting at school. What they are finding is that kids are getting better and better.

And music kids are the best of the best.
Music kids:

·         Abuse substances less than non-music kids

·         Attend more classes than non-music kids

·         Get higher grades than non-music kids

·         Graduate from high school more than non-music kids

·         Attend and graduate from college more than non-music kids

This isn’t what adults typically expect. In fact, polls show that we generally think teenage behavior is getting worse when it is actually the opposite.

So while the adults continue to argue over how to best reform our nation’s schools, it might be important to know that today’s kids are doing better than previous generations in many ways, and the music kids are downright GREAT!

Thanks for your supporting your student in the performing arts – it’s SO worth it!

Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s band teacher if there’s anything we can do to be of assistance in his/her band experience.

W.G.I. Fundraising Telethon

“The impact of canceling two World Championships and the entire 2021 competitive season cut a deep wound in the financial health of WGI Sport of the Arts”, says Director of Operations Bart Woodley. Union Indoor Percussion and Guard would have competed in those events.

Adam Bruce, Union Percussion Programs Director explained: “Union has a long history of competing and performing in WGI dating back to the 80s when indoor color guard and marching percussion were first forming. In recent years, the indoor drumline has competed in A, Open, and World class divisions at WGI, seeing success in each division. Students and parents alike love the spotlight that is shown upon the percussionists through WGI. It has been one of the premier activities that we take part in that has helped to perpetuate generations of successful percussion sections at Union.”

WGI Telethon.JPG

As you may know, we traditionally host a WGI event at Union, and the organization and program are also a huge part of our Guard program and its success over the year.

Please consider participating in this fundraising event to keep advanced marching arts alive. Find the details and donate any time or tune in to the live Telethon HERE.
