UBPC - NEEDS YOUR HELP

While we are sad that May is quickly approaching and some of our parents will have students graduating, we are excited to be preparing for a busy year ahead for Renegade Regiment! If you are interested in serving our fabulous organization in a volunteer position, please consider submitting an application SOON...by 4/29. You can go to unionbands.com/volunteer to submit application.

This organization can only support our students and the directors with everyone’s help. It takes many hands to fill all of the important roles that keep the band running and UBPC is looking for energetic volunteers to fill these positions. The UPBC’s main resource is YOU.

Do you have a hobby or skill you think could benefit the organization? Do you have a heart to help and serve? We are looking for volunteers to help serve on open board positions. Below are just a few of the areas we are looking for help:

All fundraising products available for checkout are out of stock for the rest of the school year.

We will have details on the Living Colors Flowers Delivery date soon! Sign up for our REMIND to get that information when it is available.

Our final spring fundraiser has been canceled due to low participation in spring fundraising efforts. Fundraising will kick back up next fall to aid families in paying band fees!

*Due to rising shipping costs, our "Shop With Scrip'' cards will only be delivered through UBPC once per semester. We will continue to take orders for plastic gift cards through March, and then the next UBPC Delivery will be in the fall.

*You can always order "Shop With Scrip'' cards any time using the ship to home option or electronic gift cards.

Student Account Important Message

Any remaining balance due on your financial account for fundraising, class fees, trip fees, or any other misc. fee is required to be paid in full no later than April 29th. All accounts should have a zero or credit balance by this date. Please log into your CHARMS account to check your financial statement to ensure your account is paid in full.

Patches!

If you ordered a Patch Pack, you may pick them up after school after 4pm May 10th in the band hall or on the same day at the May parent meeting on Tuesday, May 10th or at the Band Banquet Monday, May 16th. I will also have show patches ($6) and Renegade Review ($6) patches for sale on both dates if you are interested.

Overwhelmed by the cost of being a part of one of the best band programs in the land? Look no further than our WONDERFUL fundraising opportunities at OneOk field! Union Bands help staff a concession stand at the Drillers and FC Tulsa events at OneOk field. When you volunteer, $45 per volunteer gets deposited directly in your student’s Charms account. When you bring your student and volunteer together, that’s $90 for just one event!

We have had so many families over the years take advantage of this unbelievable opportunity to raise plenty of money for their band account. It is also a great way to raise money without having to sell anything to family and friends. The first event is a week away, and we could really use your participation

Despite Distance Learning this week, Regiment-Indoor WILL take place as originally scheduled, this Fri 4:15-6:15pm at the 8th Grade Band Room. (High School students will meet at 3:45pm)

Wearing of a mask is STRONGLY encouraged, & hand sanitizer will applied upon entering the session space.

8TH GRADE TRIP

TRIP INFO HERE

As announced at the beginning of the school year, the 8th Grade Band will be taking a class trip to Dallas April 22-23, 2022. The trip will include an important performance experience at the University of North Texas in Denton, a fun overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge, and bonding at Six Flags over Texas. Trip information can be found at unionbands.com/8thspringtrip.

The cost of the class trip is $295. Two payments are due: $147.50 due by February 15, 2022 and $147.50 due by March 15, 2022. All students are expected to attend the trip, but if extenuating circumstances prohibit your child from attending, you must opt out HERE by January 15, 2022.

Parents that are interested in applying to chaperone for this trip can apply HERE by February 1, 2022. The cost per chaperone is $200.

It is also vital that all parents complete the appropriate paperwork for their student immediately. That paperwork can be found HERE. We have also attached the beginning of the year welcome letter, in case you missed it!

We need cashiers and student runners for our Dippin’ Dots stand that is typically run by our students! FOR 6TH GRADE PARENTS

On Thursday, December 9, your child will have his/her first ever performance on their instrument — congratulations!

We know what you are thinking… “Are you sure they are ready? Because some of the sounds I’m hearing at home don’t quite seem performance-ready!” Please rest assured that they are ready and EXCITED to perform for you and share what they have learned. As you mark this moment in their educational development, we hope that you will CELEBRATE it with your child. Make a big deal out of it and tell the world how proud you are that they are learning an instrument.

This first concert is a snapshot of their growth, much like when parents make a notch in the doorframe to mark their child’s height. Without these “sharing moments”, their growth as musicians would pass unremarked, so this is a BIG deal. You may even want to consider asking them to do a private concert for you at home as a practice run!

We hope you will cherish this moment in time, as the beginning of a wonderful adventure of growth and exploration. In many ways, your child’s progress in music will mirror their maturation as an individual. Studying music will foster self-confidence, goal setting, problem-solving skills, and perseverance. As they become better musicians, they in turn will become better people.

You and your child have begun a wonderful journey, and we look forward to supporting you in the coming months and years. Celebrate this moment!

ESPECIALLY FOR PARENTS OF 7th & 8th GRADERS

The Union 8th Grade Band did a terrific job at the High School Football Game on October 29. And we look forward to upcoming performances: 8th Grade Concert on Tues. Dec. 7, 7:00pm at the UPAC, and the 7th Grade Concert on Mon. Dec. 13, 7:00pm at the UPAC!

We’d be lying if I told you that we’ve never had this conversation with a parent:
“My child enjoys music, but they just aren’t passionate about it, so we are going to explore other interests…”

At first pass, this may seem like a logical thought process. But somewhere recently we read that passion develops as a result of time and mastery and that takes more than just one year. While it may seem like they’ve been playing their instruments for quite a while, in the grand scheme of things, they are still young and developing musicians. You wouldn’t take this same approach with math, science, or history.

To be passionate means to have found success, and being successful in music takes time. In today’s “I need it now” world, music is a test of patience and tenacity that will yield great dividends to those who see it through.

Many students who showed marginal success as beginners blossom into highly skilled musicians after time. We’ve even had a few disinterested musicians tell us that they want to pursue a career in music. Their enjoyment and passion grew into something more over time.

We fully understand, accept, and embrace the fact that most of these children will not pursue music as a profession in the same way that most math students will not be mathematicians, most science students will not become scientists, and most history students will not become historians.

For many students, the pandemic slowed their progress and made learning an instrument even more challenging than it already is. Now is the time to double-down and show them that we are proud of them for sticking with it. After all, if you can learn an instrument in a pandemic, you can do anything!

And, it’s not just about learning to play an instrument.

We pursue music to develop our brains. We pursue music to appreciate beauty. We pursue music to appreciate a challenge and learn to overcome obstacles. But most of all, we pursue music to be human. And that is the one thing we know ALL students will be: human.

7TH GRADE CONCERT REMINDER

The concert will be at the Union High School Performing Arts Center (UPAC) on Monday, December 13th, at 7:00pm. The students will need to arrive before 6:30pm. Please park in the south parking lot of the high school. Everyone will enter through the South Entrance of the High School. This is a required concert for all 7th grade band students, and they are required to stay for the whole concert. The concert is free to everyone. Feel free to invite family and friends to the concert!

The students are required to have an all black concert attire. By now most everyone should have acquired this all black concert attire. If you have not, please try to find time this week to purchase the black attire.

Ladies:

Black dress pants
Long-sleeved black dress shirt (3/4 sleeves are acceptable)
Closed-toe black dress shoes with TALL black socks

Gentlemen:

- Black dress pants

- Long-sleeve black dress shirt

- Black belt (optional, but if wearing belt, it needs to be black)

- Black dress shoes and TALL black socks

*No bare arms above the elbow or bare legs are allowed
